Oscar Hayes was a wealthy businessman in Muskogee when
Oklahoma was Indian Territory. His desire was to be the first
Governor of Oklahoma in 1907 when it became a state. He
began construction on the house that year with the intention
of making this house the Governor's Mansion. He told everyone
that he would make his inaugural speech from the balcony of
the house. Unfortunately, he did not win the race, but his home
stands today as an elegant and welcoming abode to travelers.
Jim and Brenda Holder found the home boarded up and in
deteriorating condition in 1995, and purchased the home in
January of 1996. The renovation of the home has been an
ongoing project of love and devotion. All new wiring and
plumbing has brought the house to current standards while
endeavoring to stay true to the design of the house. This
majestic home is located in the Silk Stocking District of
Muskogee, Oklahoma, just a few blocks from downtown.
